About SAPHIR
Our Team
SAPHIR (Soft Articulated Physical-interaction Intelligent Robots) is part of the Advanced Robotics @ Queen Mary (ARQ) Research Centre at Queen Mary, University of London. Founded in 2018, the team is led by Professor Kaspar Althoefer and includes a dozen PhD students.
SAPHIR aims to conduct robotics research at the highest level and to generate disruptive innovations which have a major impact in all areas relating to robotics. The team actively pursues collaborative activities with partners in the UK and overseas in robotics and autonomous systems.​
Our Mission

SAPHIR is a team of dedicated roboticists creating novel robotics solutions at the forefront of science and technology.
Our mission is to conduct fundamental research and invent in the fields of soft robotics, robotic perception, haptics and robot-environment interaction as well as to promote robotics and train the next generation of roboticists.
Our work is application oriented addressing real-world problems in industry, society, healthcare and extreme environments. We are successfully working with a range of companies in the UK and Europe.
Our achievements are, so we believe, a direct consequence of working as a team with everyone contributing to the research endeavours through their complementary expertise. Our collaborative efforts go beyond Team Robotix continuously collaborating with international research organisations and companies.
SAPHIR is a research-active Team of roboticists conducting research in the framework of competitively sponsored research projects with funding from bodies including EPSRC, the EU, Innovate UK and dstl. Since being founded in 2018, the Team has built up a project portfolio exceeding £ 2M.
